If you love pizza as much as we do then you’re going to love this variation of the meal. It will remind you of being in an Italian restaurant without all of the work. If you have pizza one night, consider using your left over ingredients to make this delicious stromboli pizza.
What Makes This Homemade Stromboli So Easy?
Stromboli pizza, the old-fashioned way, uses homemade dough and marinara sauce. This can be a long process as the dough rises. In this recipe, we use puff pastry. We love the way the puff pastry bakes in the oven until it’s golden brown and flaky. It’s also extremely easy to make the pizza roll. It also takes very little to no time for the pastry to thaw. In fact, if you take out your puff pastry, preheat your oven, and cook your sausage, your pastry will be thawed by then.
We also love using a store bought marinara or pizza sauce because it’s so convenient and it tastes great too. We leave this up to you on using your favorite brand. If you don’t have this on hand, you can always jazz up a simple 8oz can of tomato sauce, but more on that later.
The Ingredients That Make Stromboli Pizza So Good!
The main ingredients in this Stromboli pizza recipe are the simplest and most common ones. These include sausage, pepperoni, and green peppers. You can’t have pizza without cheese. In this recipe we used shredded mozzarella cheese but we love to add fresh parmesan cheese over top for some added sharp flavor. If you’re a cheese lover, add more than 1 cup. Extra cheese adds extra flavor.
When it comes to added veggies, the possibilities are endless. We love using the freshest ingredients to this Stromboli pizza because it lightens up the meal a bit. We commonly use red onions, fresh garlic, black olives, banana peppers, and fresh basil. Don’t worry about sautéing the onions first because they will cook within the stromboli.
What to Serve with Stromboli Pizza
When it comes to serving the Stromboli pizza for dinner, we love accompanying this with salad with caesar dressing, roasted broccoli, or even garlic bread if you don’t mind the added carbs.
Aside from the more traditional sides, you could even pair it with a tasty vegetable soup if it’s colder where you live. Soup and savory pastries pair so well together on a cozy evening. I suggest you give this a try if you haven’t already.
