Why You’ll Love Green Chile Artichoke Dip
- It's so easy to make, simply dump everything in a baking dish and bake for only about 20 minutes cook time. You only need about 25-30 minutes total time to make this. The green chile artichoke dip is especially great as a last minute party dip idea because of how easy and fast you can put it together.
- It's kid friendly and the spice is minimal. Any time you see chile you might be a little hesitant on how much heat we're talking about. The green chiles actually don't have much heat at all making this a great kid friendly dip recipe.
- The dip packs a ton of flavor. Canned artichokes, fresh minced garlic, and green chiles are the best combination. The garlic compliments the dish so well without overpowering it. The green chiles and artichokes add a bright fresh flavor to the dip
- The dip is versatile, eat with chips as a green chili appetizer or serve as a spread on bread for a sandwich or try on a chicken wrap! It’s so creamy, you can get creative with how you use it if you have leftovers.
- Don't want to bake it? You can simply make this in the crock pot if you want. Place the heat on low and stir once warmed through for an easy no effort slow cooker recipe.
What is Green Chile Artichoke Dip?
So what exactly is green chile artichoke dip? The dip base is thick and creamy from the combination of cream cheese and mayonnaise. The two together when warmed make a great creamy base, perfect for any additions like green chiles and artichokes.
The cheese choice for this recipe is parmesan. A lot of recipe use mozzarella cheese which is great to add in dip and really gives you the stringiness with each bite. I decided to go with parmesan because it's sharper and has a stronger flavor without being overwhelming. It’s found throughout the dip and on top as a crispy caramelized cheese crust.
Folded into the dip base are minced garlic, canned artichoke hearts, and green chiles. Using fresh minced garlic brings so much flavor. It doesn't compare to the garlic in a jar or garlic powder. The artichokes bring a juicy, nutty flavor that makes the dip so good.
The liquid from the artichokes is released as it cooks and thins out the easy artichoke cheese dip just perfectly. The chiles add brightness and color! Depending on the type you buy you may get a little spice or just sweet and savory flavor!
What to Serve with Green Chile Artichoke Dip
Every time I serve this dip, I serve it with tortilla chips. I love the scoops or even a blue corn with this recipe. The scoops allow you to pick up those chunky pieces of artichoke without breaking the dip. Blue tortilla chips are a great option because they taste so good and provide a beautiful contrast in color with the dip. This is important because most people eat with their eyes first.
Aside from chips you can serve this with toasted baguettes which are a great option if you’re not wanting something too crunchy. We have a restaurant that serves dips with toasted baguettes that are baked with a seasoned herb butter which is so good. Simply throw the baguettes into the oven while the dip is baking and there you have it, warm goodness!
If you're looking for a healthier way to eat this delicious but guilty pleasure, consider using celery, carrots, and other veggies as a dip in place of ranch. If you're doing this you may need to cut the artichokes into smaller pieces so you can pick them up easier!
On the other hand don’t limit yourself to just using this as a dip. Try spreading on a sandwich with your favorite deli meat, tomatoes, and lettuce. It’s a great and more flavorful replacement for plain mayonnaise. Try this also in a grilled chicken wrap, over top of potato skins, or on a pizza! Get creative, there are so many possibilities!
Ingredients for Green Chile Artichoke Dip
The ingredients for the green chile artichoke dip with cream cheese are so simple. There’s very little prep time if any aside from the minced garlic. Using canned veggies make this a convenient dip. You may even have a lot of these ingredients in your pantry already.
- Cream cheese and mayonnaise - these are the two main ingredients that make the base nice and creamy.
- Parmesan cheese - used within the dip and on top, use freshly grated for the best results
- Garlic - freshly minced is going to give the dip so much flavor, you could substitute garlic powder but it’s not going to have the same effect
- Artichoke hearts - we use canned, make sure they're drained from the juice and chopped. You can prepare from raw but it takes quite a bit longer.
- Canned diced green chiles - We use canned for these as well. While only a 4oz can is required this is one of those cases where a little bit goes a long way
To Use Canned Artichoke Hearts or Fresh?
This depends on your personal preference. I love to go with canned artichokes because of how convenient they are. Artichokes can be timely to prep but spending the extra time will reap great results. If you have fresh artichokes to use up, they would go perfect in this dip. On the other hand if you’re looking to save time I suggest going with canned.
If you’ve never prepped an artichoke heart before, don't let it overwhelm you. It’s simple. To start, cut stems off and about 1 1/2 inches from the tops of the artichokes. Prepare to steam the artichokes by placing a steamer basket into a large pot. Fill the pot with water just below the steamer basket.
Place the artichoke into the steamer basket and bring the water to a boil then reduce to a simmer. Steam for about 40 minutes or until the outer leaves of the artichoke pull off easily.
Remove the leaves from the artichoke and throw away any that are too tough or too small. Chop the bottoms of the artichoke and set aside until you're ready to add to the hot artichoke dip.
How to Make This Hot Artichoke Dip with Green Chilies
Would you believe it if I told you that it only takes 3 steps to make this green chile artichoke dip? It's true, it’s so quick and easy to make this artichoke dip with green chilies and cream cheese. It’ll be ready before you know it.
- Step 1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees
- Step 2. In a baking dish add cream cheese, mayo, garlic parmesan cheese, artichoke hearts, and green chiles. You can try to mix all the ingredients at this point but I decide to wait until after it has baked so the cream cheese has melted and it’s easier to get everything fully combined. Bake for 15 minutes.
- Step 3. Once done remove from the oven and stir well
How Spicy is Green Chile Artichoke Dip?
This artichoke and green chili dip isn't that spicy at all. The amount of spice in the dip all depends on how spicy the canned green chiles are. The types of chilies found in cans are most commonly Anaheim, Poblano, or Pasilla. These are the more mild varieties. For this recipe I used ortega chilis which are mild and pack very little heat. However, the flavor is very bright and robust.
However, if you like the heat in your green chilies dip, certain brands are more spicy than others. I suggest reading the packaging before buying. Some brands will specify that they are hot while most others will be on the mild side.
Storing Green Chile Artichoke Dip
Storing the mayo green chili dip is easy. After the dip has cooled, place in an air tight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Reheat by placing in the microwave for 20-30 seconds at a time stirring frequently until warmed through.
ou can also place the dip in a small sauce pan and heat over medium low to medium heat. Alternatively you can place in an oven safe container and reheat at 350 degrees for about 7-10 minutes or until heated through. Try to avoid reheating twice to avoid it going bad sooner.
To freeze long term place the dip in a freezer safe container for up to 3 months. Be sure to thaw completely before reheating. To reheat use the methods stated above.
